Benguerir: A Strong Deep Tech and Startup Hub for Global Innovators in Morocco and Beyond
As Deep Tech takes the world by storm, Benguerir has positioned itself as an ideal hub for startup development, with University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P) leading the charge to build the vibrant ecosystem. With all the critical factors for emergence as a tech hub in place, including a world-class university, a data center targeting Africa’s needs for data protection and centralization, innovative leaders supporting R&D, and infrastructure to support startup growth, Benguerir is a premiere destination for founders, researchers, and entrepreneurs.
A Rich History of Innovation
UM6P is more than a university – it is an ecosystem driver with innovation at the core at the forefront of Ben Guerir’s ecosystem growth. Its R&D efforts are a strategic driver, encouraging creativity and meeting challenges by focusing on the applied research, entrepreneurship, and innovation that serves Africa.
"Morocco’s vibrant startup ecosystem is a beacon of innovation, with institutions like UM6P driving transformative change across Africa,” says Marc Penzel, Founder and President, Startup Genome. “By fostering cutting-edge research, entrepreneurial talent, and sustainable solutions, UM6P empowers a new generation to shape Africa’s future and position Morocco as a hub for global impact.”
Pradeep Nair, Senior Advisor at Startup Genome, added, “UM6P is truly igniting the startup scene in Morocco. They've created a vibrant ecosystem where new companies are connected with everything they need to thrive. The facilities at UM6P are world-class, comparable to what you'd find in tech giants like Silicon Valley.”
Empowering Talent Through Entrepreneurship & Venturing Programs
At UM6P, supporting entrepreneurs means empowering talent to empower Africa, starting with world-class support programs available to entrepreneurs across the continent that go across the stages from ideation to access to market. Among its youth-centered programs, the UM6P AgriYoung Innovate National Competition aims to stimulate agricultural entrepreneurship and strengthen the ecosystem for the benefit of young entrepreneurs in rural areas with innovative projects in the fields of digital and climate-smart agriculture.“In 2023, Morocco's startup landscape has shown remarkable vigor, a trend we see persisting into 2024," says Yassine Laghzioui, CEO of UM6P Ventures. "We're witnessing a diversification beyond Fintech, with Agritech and Greentech startups gaining traction in Africa, driven by urgent environmental challenges and the continent's vast agricultural potential. There's a notable upsurge in African talent, pivotal for startups as they navigate local and regional challenges and, increasingly, these startups are crafting solutions with a global market in mind.”
