Highlights

Porto is northern Portugal’s dynamic entrepreneurial center, where strong university research, growing venture activity, and a collaborative startup community fuel the emergence of globally-oriented technology companies. The ecosystem is ranked #51-60 among the Top 100 Emerging Ecosystems globally, with an Ecosystem Value of $8.59B, growing a staggering 693% between 2021 and 2025, and showing strong specialization in Software, Health, and Fintech.

Porto City Council continues to advance its innovation strategy through initiatives such as ScaleUp Porto, which in December 2025 convened founders, investors, and ecosystem organizations to launch a regional startup ecosystem study and strengthen collaboration. In February 2026, incubator UPTEC launched the Matching Founders platform through the Municipality’s Open Call initiative.

Porto benefits from its proximity to active Portuguese and Iberian venture capital firms, as well as international investors backing globally-scaling technology companies operating in the city. The region is home to a growing base of local venture capital activity, including firms such as Beta Capital, Iberis Capital, Core Angels Porto, 33N Ventures, Bright Pixel Capital, Critical Ventures, and Sogrape Ventures. In 2025, the Porto region also recorded several notable exits, including Airport.ai, Advanced Cyclone Systems, Addvolt, Adapttech, Laxton, and MyCloma, signaling increasing maturity and liquidity within the ecosystem.

Public and private institutions help de-risk early-stage ventures through incubation, proof-of-concept support, and access to grant or co-funding channels. In August 2025, the UPTEC School of Startups program selected up to 30 projects for mentorship and business development support across sectors.

Porto’s ecosystem is supported by 50+ platforms like UPTEC, Founders Founders, U.Porto Innovation, and Porto Innovation Center, which provide broad support for youth, underrepresented, and women-led startups. In May 2025, Founders Founders launched the Big Bang Bada Boom acceleration program, designed to help high-potential startups grow from early traction to $11.7M in revenue. The annual SIM Conference positions Porto as a hub for curated, high-quality connections between startups, investors, and ecosystem leaders, combining targeted networking, knowledge sharing, and startup–investor matchmaking.
