 Challenge: Steering global startup investment decisions

By 2015, Microsoft Ventures — the corporate program that became Microsoft for Startups — was operating accelerators in Bengaluru, Beijing, Berlin, London, Paris, Seattle, and Tel Aviv. With a global footprint already in place, leadership needed sharper answers: which ecosystems to expand into, which programs to partner with, and which founder communities were truly worth the investment.

General-purpose research firms could survey companies but couldn't navigate startup ecosystems or reach the founder networks that mattered. Microsoft Ventures wanted a primary research-backed dataset built specifically on startup communities — one that could ground location, partnership, and investment decisions in evidence rather than reputation or anecdote.

Solution: Multi-year startup ecosystem data partnership

Startup Genome built a four-year data partnership with Microsoft Ventures spanning from 2015 to 2018, delivered as three licensed datasets that gave Microsoft a comparable, primary research-backed view of the world's leading startup ecosystems.
The first dataset — the 2015 Global Startup Ecosystem Report — covered the top 30 ecosystems with all aggregate analyses and ranking factors. The 2017–2018 packages expanded coverage to 50+ ecosystems across 30+ countries with 80+ metrics tied to startup performance, alongside a sub-sector dataset built from machine learning classification of one million startup URLs into 15 verticals. A parallel 2017 Cloud Service Provider survey of 2,000 startup executives mapped how startups chose and switched between AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google, IBM, and others across 43+ ecosystems.
