Latin America's startup story in GSER 2026 is one of acceleration. After two years of contraction following the 2021 funding peak, the region is seeing renewed capital flows, a maturing AI investment thesis, and — in Brazil's case — a new model for how ecosystems benchmark themselves against the world's best.

A Region on the Move

Latin America saw near-record exits in Q1 2026 — with Q1 exit value already larger than the whole-year 2025 total, a result strong enough to skew full-year projections and signal very sharp growth in exits over $50 million across the region in 2026.

São Paulo remains the region's defining hub, ranking #1 in Latin America and #37 globally. Brazil attracted $2.03 billion in venture funding across 363 deals in 2025 — 52.9% of all regional funding — with São Paulo capturing the largest share. The year's standout deal came from Omie, the São Paulo-based SME management software firm, which raised a $160 million Series D at a $700 million valuation. AI emerged as the dominant investment theme across the ecosystem in 2025, backed by the Brazilian Artificial Intelligence Plan's $4.2 billion commitment to position the country as a global AI leader; São Paulo's AI-Native Ecosystem Value grew 459% against the H2 2021–23 baseline, far outpacing the regional growth average of 50%.

Mexico City delivered one of the region's standout moments in 2025. In the second quarter alone, Mexican entrepreneurs raised $437 million in venture capital — surpassing Brazil in regional financing for the first time since 2012 — powered in large part by a $170 million Series C round for Fintech startup Klar. Mexico City's Ecosystem Value has reached $27 billion, with 205% growth since GSER's H2 2018–2020 baseline, well above the regional growth average of 79%. The ecosystem has also produced eight unicorns over the past ten years, and in January 2026, British Fintech firm Revolut launched full banking operations in Mexico — its first expansion beyond Europe, backed by more than $100 million in capital.

Brazil: A New Model for Ecosystem Benchmarking

One of GSER 2026's most distinctive Latin America stories isn't a funding milestone — it's a blueprint for how ecosystems measure themselves against the world's best. In partnership with Sebrae Nacional, Startup Genome conducted a comprehensive ecosystem assessment across three of Brazil's most strategically significant startup ecosystems: São Paulo, Florianópolis, and Recife.

The challenge each ecosystem faced was the same: strong local foundations — universities with globally-ranked programs, anchor institutions, and above-average founder loyalty — undermined by a structural ceiling when benchmarked against the world's most advanced innovation hubs. Rather than relying on anecdotal stakeholder perspectives, Startup Genome's assessment combined founder surveys, in-depth stakeholder interviews, global benchmarking, investment flow analysis, talent assessment, Ecosystem Lifecycle modelling, and sector competitiveness analysis to identify, with precision, the root causes of underperformance and the genuine competitive advantages each ecosystem could activate.

The impact was immediate. Across all three ecosystems, the diagnostics opened structured dialogue between founders, investors, government institutions, universities, and support organizations that had previously operated in parallel — conversations now translating into joint working groups, coordinated planning, and shared roadmaps for action. This evidence-based approach offers a replicable model for how Latin America's innovation ecosystems can unlock their next stage of global competitiveness.

Latin America Regional Ranking 2026

GSER 2026 ranks the leading ecosystems across Latin America. São Paulo holds the top spot, followed by Mexico City at #2 — together anchoring a ranking that spans Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Uruguay, and Ecuador.
