Asia's Startup Ecosystems: Divergence, Scale, AI

Asia's startup ecosystems are recording exit growth. Strategy and execution now decide who continues to rise.

Asia's startup story in the Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2026 (GSER 2026) is one of divergence and transformation. As AI reshapes the global innovation order, Asia's ecosystems are responding in sharply different ways — and the data tells a nuanced story.

A Region Reordering Itself

The defining headline for Asia this year: nearly every Chinese ecosystem in the global Top 40 has slipped. Beijing (-1 to #6), Shanghai (-1 to #11), Shenzhen (-2 to #19), Hangzhou (-5 to #28), and Guangzhou (-3 to #38) all lost ground, with only Wuxi defying the trend, climbing six positions to #36. The lesson here is not that geography is destiny. It is that strategy, focus, and execution still decide who rises and who recedes.

Elsewhere, the momentum is growing. Sri Lanka recorded the biggest overall jump in the Top 100 Emerging Ecosystems, climbing more than 65 positions. Chengdu rose more than 20 positions to the #31–40 range. Chennai climbed into the #41–50 range of the Emerging Ecosystem rankings, reflecting India's growing depth of startup activity beyond its flagship hubs.

Asia Regional Ranking 2026

GSER 2026 ranks 30 ecosystems across Asia, spanning global leaders and high-growth emerging hubs. Beijing holds the top spot regionally for the second year running, ahead of Singapore at #2 and Seoul at #3. Tokyo holds #5, while Bengaluru-Karnataka is the top-ranked Indian ecosystem at #6. India's breadth is notable: Delhi (#10), Mumbai (#13), and Hyderabad (#21–25) all feature, alongside Pune, the Kansai Region, and Chennai.

Asia's Exit Surge

Financially, Asia punches well above its weight. The region captured 30% of global exit value while accounting for just 12% of exit count — driven by large IPOs like Moore Threads ($1.13B, December 2025) and Indian Fintech platform Groww ($750M, November 2025). Large exit value in Asia grew 207% from 2023 to 2025, the highest rate of any region globally. Asia's Series A funding rose 4% year-over-year, with deal count also increasing — the only region globally where both metrics grew.

Spotlight: Bengaluru-Karnataka

Bengaluru-Karnataka stands out as one of Asia's most compelling growth stories. The ecosystem has generated approximately $79 billion in VC funding since 2010 and accounts for roughly 46% of all VC investment into Indian startups, with an Ecosystem Value of $153 billion and growth of 190% — well above the regional average of 66%.

Government ambition is accelerating: the Karnataka Startup Policy 2.0 (2025–2030), backed by a $62.4M outlay, targets 25,000 new startups with a focus on AI, Quantum Computing, and Blockchain. Bengaluru attracts 58% of India's AI startup funding (~$1.5B since 2020), and in 2025 became home to India's first commercially-deployable 25-qubit quantum computer. In January 2026, payments firm Juspay reached a $1.2B valuation — one of the year's first unicorns.

The Broader Picture

Seoul (#9 globally, #3 in Asia) is entering a new phase of global competitiveness, backed by a $10.1 billion startup investment market in 2025 and a record $22 billion national R&D budget. Singapore (#8) continues to anchor Southeast Asia with 300% ecosystem value growth and a $21.9 billion R&D commitment under RIE 2030. Tokyo (#12) is scaling fast under Startup Strategy 2.0, with its government startup budget rising to $448M in 2026. Emerging hubs like Busan and Kuala Lumpur are investing heavily in infrastructure and talent to build their next chapters.

Across the region, the message is consistent: ecosystems that move with urgency — aligning public ambition, private capital, and entrepreneurial talent — are the ones defining Asia's innovation future.
