AI, Big Data & Analytics

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s computer science and engineering school is the largest in the country with multiple research groups focusing on AI and big-data analytics. Over 80 AI companies are based in Jerusalem including Mobileye, which was acquired by Intel for $15.2 billion, the largest acquisition of an Israeli company to date, and Lightricks, an AI unicorn. Jerusalem is also home to a vibrant AI community which includes JerusML, one the biggest AI communities in Israel, and DataHack, the biggest data science hackathon in Israel.

Life Sciences

Jerusalem has close to 150 Life Sciences companies including Orcam, the first Israeli digihealth unicorn, Kahr Medical which raised $18 million in 2020 and Pepticom, which raised $5 million in 2019. Jerusalem offers various platforms to support life-science companies: Biohouse, a workspace inside Hadassah Hospital that serves as a startup laboratory and home base for IBM's digital health accelerator; BioGiv, a shared lab space and IP-free-zone inside the Hebrew University for life-science companies; and Aylnnovation, a workspace and beta-site for assistive technology companies.

Jerusalem is home to Israel’s leading universities such as The Hebrew University and Bezalel Academy of Art & Design, which play significant roles in the creation of science-based startups and fueling the ecosystem with new talent.

COVID-19 Policy

The Israel Government laid out a $180 million grant package to support the country's high-tech startups. These grants will be deployed through the Israel Innovation Authority (IIA), the government’s funding arm for R&D and innovation. The City of Jerusalem established a support center for businesses in the city, in order to assist them with accessing all the benefits offered on a national and municipal level (including special assistance with the IIA grants).
