Highlights

Melbourne is a leading hub distinguished by its deep talent base, strong research institutions, and globally-connected startup community. The ecosystem continues to gain momentum through sustained activity across AI, Fintech, and Health innovation, supported by both public and private sector collaboration.

Victorian startups are attracting record levels of investment, leading Australia with $2.4 billion raised in 2025. Commercialization of innovation from the state’s world-class universities is accelerating, with Victoria now home to 200+ university spinouts valued at $6.2 billion. Victoria has a strong pipeline of early-stage enterprise software tech startups and breakout biotech successes. More than 50% of Australia’s startups in the Enterprise Software and Healthtech sectors are based in Victoria.

Capital flows show both progress and pressure points. A record $467 million mega-round by Airwallex and several raises over $100 million underscored the strength of Victoria’s scaleups, while Series B activity also rose. Series A investment and seed and pre-seed funding continues to lag, however promising new entrants into the ecosystem include Advance VC, Boson Ventures, FB Ventures, Scale, Tidal Ventures, Triple Bubble and Unlock Capital — who each received $300,000 to set up in the state through LaunchVic’s VC Support Program. The funds are expected to collectively raise over $275 million in early-stage capital, targeting local startups from seed to Series A to address the funding gap.

Melbourne’s startup ecosystem is supported by a diverse network of accelerators and university incubators that provide mentorship, funding access, and structured programs to help early-stage ventures scale efficiently. Emerging startups such as Relevance AI secured new funding in late 2025 to scale no-code AI agent platforms, reflecting rapid commercialization of research-driven technologies.
